August Waiver Wire Round-up

Now three days into September, rosters have expanded and teams can no longer acquire players for their prospective playoff runs. Let's take a moment to look back at all the transactions carried out in August.

After one of the busiest July trade deadlines in recent memory, anyone hoping for a reprieve in August was sorely disappointed. With the second wild card putting several more teams in the playoff hunt, a total of twenty-eight deals (the most since at least 2006) were worked out via waiver claims and trades.

The total of eighteen waiver trades is the largest number since 2009, and the ten waiver claims are the most since 2010. Overall, forty-four players were moved in these transactions, with another seventy being picked up on the free agent market.

While the biggest move of the month hands down was $250+ million "MegaTrade" that sent Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to Los Angeles, several other teams made smaller moves that could pay dividends down the home stretch.
