Rockies sign Manny Corpas to minor-league deal

Colorado has also given their former closer an invitation to spring training next month.

The Colorado Rockies have brought a familiar name back into the fold, signing right-hander Manny Corpas to a minor-league deal with an invite to big-league camp next month, reports Thomas Harding of MLB.com:

The Rockies have looked to an old friend to help with their new pitching plan.

Right-hander Manny Corpas, the closer on the 2007 Rockies club that went to the only World Series in team history, rejoined the Rockies on Wednesday, agreeing to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training.

Corpas, 30, has never come close to repeating his numbers from that dream 2007 season. The right-hander threw 78 innings that year, racking up 19 saves while amassing a 2.08 ERA aided by a .261 BABIP against. In the five seasons since then, Corpas owns a 4.86 ERA and .323 BABIP against in 221⅓ innings and missed all of 2011 recovering from elbow surgery.

The right-hander made his way into the Chicago Cubs' bullpen this past season in June. He performed well out of the gate, but things starting going off-course in mid-August. Corpas owned a 3.51 ERA through his first 31 appearances but closed out the season with a 7.71 mark in his last 17 games, finishing the year with a 5.01 ERA overall.
