White Sox sign seven players

The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms with seven players on minor-league contracts.

The Chicago White Sox announced that they have agreed to terms on minor-league contracts with seven players. Right-handed pitchers Jeff Gray and Ramon Troncoso, left-hander David Percy, catcher Bryan Anderson, infielders Josh Bell and Steve Tolleson and outfielder Stefan Gartrell have received non-roster invites to spring training.

Gray, 31, has gone 7-3 with a 4.99 over 140⅔ innings in five seasons. He spent 2012 with the Minnesota Twins where he went 6-1 with a 5.71 ERA in 52 innings. Gray appeared in six games for the White Sox in 2011.

Troncoso, 29, has gone 8-8 with a 3.92 ERA over 197⅓ innings in four seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He appeared in 73 games and posted a 2.72 ERA in 2009. He spent last season in Triple-A Albuquerque, where he went 4-1 with a 6.67 ERA.

Purcey, 30, has gone 6-12 with a 5.38 ERA over 180⅔ innings in four seasons. He last appeared in the major leagues in 2011, where he went 1-2 with a 5.61 ERA with the Blue Jays, A's and Tigers. He spent last season in the Phillies organization.

All three pitchers will compete for a spot in the White Sox bullpen.

Anderson, 26, is a career .273/.327/.341 hitter in 49 plate appearances with the St. Louis Cardinals. The left-handed hitting catcher will compete with Hector Gimenez for the backup role behind starter Tyler Flowers.

Bell, 26, was once a top prospect with the Baltimore Orioles. He was rated #37 by Baseball America in 2010. In three seasons, Bell has hit .195/.223/.265 with four home runs in 282 plate appearances. He hit .173/.232/.269 with a homer last season for the Diamondbacks.

Tolleson, 29, has hit .225/.273/.350 with three home runs in 129 plate appearances. He spent last season with the Orioles.

Both infielders will compete for a utility role.

Gartrell, 28, has never appeared in the major leagues. He was drafted by the White Sox in 31st round of the 2006 draft and has spent the last four seasons in Triple-A with the White Sox and Braves. He is a career .269/.349/.466 hitter with 128 home runs in the minor leagues.
