Justin Upton rejects trade to Mariners

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

Seattle was one of four teams on Upton's no-trade list.

The Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a deal that would send Justin Upton to the Mariners, but the slugger exercised his no-trade clause, report Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports.

Upton's name has come up in trade talks with several teams, including the Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves this offseason. Seattle was going to send a package of young talent to the Diamondbacks, but the players are not known at this time.

Upton, 25, has hit .278/.357/.475 with 108 home runs in six seasons for the Diamondbacks. He was the first pick of the 2005 draft. Last season he hit .280/.355/.430 with 17 home runs after hitting .289/.369/.529 with 31 home runs in 2011. He is under contract for $38.5 million over the next three seasons.

The Diamondbacks have a lot of outfield depth in Jason Kubel, Cody Ross, Adam Eaton, Gerardo Parra and Upton. There have been rumors that Kubel is also on the trading block.
