Mets rumors: Kips Wells on the radar

New York is one of three teams interested in acquiring the veteran right-hander.

The New York Mets are one of three teams looking into signing veteran right-hander Kip Wells, reports Evan Drellich of MLB.com:

Right-hander Kip Wells wants to pitch again in 2013.

A baseball source said the Mets are among three interested teams, logical because of ties the Mets’ braintrust and Wells both have to San Diego.

The 35-year-old Wells had been on a two-year hiatus from Major League Baseball when the Padres came calling last season. San Diego signed the veteran to a minor-league deal in early May and gave him seven starts in the middle of the season.

The Mets have been on a search for a veteran starter to fill out the back-end of the rotation since sending R.A. Dickey to Toronto last month. In addition to Wells, New York has also been tied to Chris Young, Carl Pavano, and Shaun Marcum.

Wells posted a not terrible 4.58 ERA over 37⅓ innings in his seven starts, but walked more batters (20) than he struck out (19). Now a 12-year MLB veteran, Wells owns a 4.71 ERA and 6.5 K/9 rate in stints with nine different clubs.
