Baker to Rolen: 'It's getting late'

Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Scott Rolen has yet to make up his mind if he wants to play in 2013.

One month prior to spring training, veteran third baseman Scott Rolen has yet to inform the Cincinnati Reds if he plans to play or retire in 2013. Reds manager Dusty Baker says he hasn't spoken to Rolen since before Christmas.

Here is what Baker told John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer:

"It's getting late. Life goes on and business goes on. Since we signed Hannahan, it's getting crowded. Plus, (Todd) Frazier deserves a chance to play."

Rolen hit .245/.318.398 with eight home runs in 330 plate appearances last season. The seven-time all star is a career .281/.364/.490 hitter with 316 home runs in his 17 seasons.

Todd Frazier played 73 games at third base for the Reds in 2012 and hit .273/.331/.498 with 19 home runs in 465 plate appearances. He finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting and is ready to become the teams everyday third baseman.

The Reds also signed Jack Hannahan to a two-year, $4 million deal in December. Hannahan played 96 games at third base last season for the Cleveland Indians and hit .244/.312/.341.

Rolen, the 1997 NL Rookie of the Year and eight-time Gold Glove winner, earned $6.5 million last season.
