Red Sox interested in Kotchman, Overbay

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

With Napoli on hold, Boston is looking for help at first base.

The Boston Red Sox have shown interest in first basemen Casey Kotchman and Lyle Overbay, reports Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. With the Mike Napoli situation still up in the air, Boston is exploring other options to play first base.

While appearing on 'The Hot Stove Show' on Thursday, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington had this to say:

"Until something is done, you have to consider other options so we’ve had to do that and we’ve continued to consider other ways to improve the team, whether it’s at first base, or elsewhere."

The Red Sox and Napoli agreed to terms on a three-year, $39 million deal earlier in the offseason, but Napoli was found to have a hip ailment during his physical and the deal never became official. While they are still trying to work through the Napoli situation, Boston is beginning to run out of other options if that deal falls through.

Kotchman, 29, hit .229.280/.333 with 12 home runs in 500 plate appearances with the Cleveland Indians last season. He is a career .262/.328/.388 hitter with 71 home runs over nine seasons.

Overbay, 35, hit .259/.331/.397 with two home runs in 131 plate appearances for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Atlanta Braves last season. He is a career .270/.353/.438 hitter with 133 home runs.

Even if Boston and Napoli agree to terms, the Red Sox may be willing to bring in a veteran for depth at first base.
