The Oakland Athletics have reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension with manager Bob Melvin.

The Oakland Athletics have reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension with manager Bob Melvin, the team has announced.

Melvin’s new deal with the A’s will keep him in Oakland through the 2016 season.

Melvin took the job in 2011 when he replaced manager Bob Geren who was fired mid-way through the season. He led the A’s to a 47-52 record for the remainder of the year and a third-place finish in the American League West.

Most expected continued mediocrity out of Melvin and the A’s last season, but Oakland surprised many on their way to a 94-win campaign and an AL West crown. In claiming the division title, the A’s overtook the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers, both of which were heavily favored entering the year.

Prior to taking over the A’s, Melvin coached the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks. Over two seasons with the Mariners he posted a record of 150-174, while he managed a mark of 337-340 in five years with the Diamondbacks.
