Mets won't trade Wheeler for Upton

Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

The Mets and Diamondbacks don't seem to be a fit for a trade.

The New York Mets will not include Zack Wheeler in a trade package for Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. A deal between the two teams seems very unlikely at this point.

Upton, who vetoed a deal last week that would have sent him to Seattle, would be a great fit in the Mets outfield. The 25-year old is also signed to a relatively cheap contract, which will see him earn $38.5 million over the next three seasons. The Diamondbacks have said that they don't have to trade Upton and will not let him go for cheap.

Wheeler, 22, is considered to be one of the top prospects in all of baseball. The right-hander was 12-8 with a 3.26 ERA in 149 innings last year. He made 19 starts at Double-A, before moving up and making six at Triple-A. Wheeler was acquired at the trade deadline in 2011 from the San Francisco Giants for Carlos Beltran.

New York would still like to acquire an outfielder and are also waiting on Scott Hairston to make a decision on his future later this week.
