Brandon Webb rumors: Phillies, Nationals, Marlins, Mets

Norm Hall

All but one of the NL East clubs is showing interest in the veteran right-hander.

Brandon Webb has not thrown a pitch in the big leagues since April of 2009, but you would not know it based on the amount of interest he has drawn from clubs this winter. In addition to the Colorado Rockies, the big right-hander is drawing the attention of most of the NL East, reports Jerry Crasnick of ESPN:

Webb, 33, presents a low-risk, high-reward option for whoever ends up taking a chance on him.

Before going down with a series of shoulder injuries at the beginning of 2009, he was one of the premier pitchers in the National League. The right-hander earned the NL Cy Young award in 2006, then was runner-up the following two seasons, posting a 3.13 ERA and 7.2 K/9 rate in 698 innings over that three-year span.

The right-hander is expected to hold a bullpen session as an audition of sorts for several teams in the coming weeks. Webb has battled his way back from both labrum and rotator cuff surgeries, so there is no telling how he will fare on the mound now.

If Webb can regain just a glimmer of his previous dominance, he could be a solid back-end of the rotation option for any club.
