Brewers, Carlos Gomez avoid arbitration

Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

The center fielder will earn $4.3 million in 2013.

The Milwaukee Brewers and center fielder Carlos Gomez have agreed to a one-year, $4.3 million deal, reports Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. This was his last time being arbitration eligible and he will be a free agent after the year.

Gomez, 27, hit .260/.305/.463 with a career high 19 home runs in 452 plate appearances in 2012. He also stole 37 bases in 43 attempts. Gomez is hitting .247/.294/.379 with 44 home runs and 130 stolen bases in his six big-league seasons spent with the Mets, Twins and Brewers.

Gomez outperformed Nyjer Morgan last year and got the majority of the starts in center field. He will be part of the Brewers outfield in 2013, which also includes Ryan Braun in left and Norichika Aoki in right. Gomez was acquired in 2009 from the Twins in exchange for J.J. Hardy. He also was named to the Dominican Republic provisional roster for the World Baseball Classic on Thursday.

The Brewers still have three arbitration eligible players in John Axford, Burke Badenhop and Marco Estrada.
