A's avoid arbitration with Jaso, Smith

John Jaso - Joe Nicholson-US PRESSWIRE

John Jaso and Seth Smith have agreed to one-year contracts.

The Oakland Athletics agreed to terms on one-year contracts with catcher John Jaso and outfielder Seth Smith on Thursday, reports Jane Lee of MLB.com. Jaso's deal is worth $1.8 million, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. The terms of Smith's deal are not yet known.

Jaso, 29, was acquired yesterday from the Mariners in a three-team deal that sent Michael Morse to Seattle. He hit .276/.394/.456 with 10 home runs in 361 plate appearances last season. For his career, the left-handed hitting Jaso is a .255/.359/.395 hitter with 20 home runs in his four seasons. He will be part of a platoon with Derek Norris. Jaso is under team control through 2015.

Smith, 30, hit .240/.333/.420 with 14 home runs in 441 plate appearances for the A's last season. It was his first year in Oakland, as he played with the Rockies for parts of five seasons before heading to the Bay. He is a career .267/.345/.470 hitter with 65 home runs. He will be part of a crowded outfield with Josh Reddick, Coco Crisp, Chris Young and Yoenis Cespedes. Smith is under team control through 2014.

The A's still have two arbitration eligible players in Jerry Blevins and Brandon Moss.
