Angels, Alberto Callaspo agree to two-year deal

Peter G. Aiken-US PRESSWIRE

The Halos' third baseman will earn close to $9 million over the next two seasons.

UPDATE 2/6 8:30 a.m. EDT: The Angels and third baseman Alberto Callaspo have finalized their new two-year, $8.975 million pact, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

The two sides had agreed to terms two weeks ago, but Callaspo did not arrive in the country to undergo his physical until yesterday. The third baseman will make $4.1 million in 2013 and $4.875 million in 2014, according to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com.

Original: The Los Angeles Angels have agreed in principle to a two-year deal with third baseman Alberto Callaspo, reports Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com:

The deal will pay the switch-hitting Callaspo $8.975 million to man the hot corner in Anaheim through the 2014 season, reports Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.

The deal buys out the third baseman's final year of arbitration and his first year of free agency, allowing time for top prospect Kaleb Cowart to develop and eventually take over.

Callaspo, 29, has manned third base for the Halos since arriving from Kansas City in July 2010. The Venezuelan has put up solid numbers in that time, hitting .266/.338/.358 with 18 home runs -- averaging roughly 3.0 bWAR each of the last two years.

Callaspo will formally exchange figures with the Angels and complete a physical at some point today in Anaheim to finalize the deal.
