Padres rumors: Chase Headley, Justin Upton trade 'not happening'

One official doesn't believe a Chase Headley/Justin Upton swap is going to happen.

While a trade between the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks involving Justin Upton and Chase Headley may appear to make sense, an official from one of the teams said a deal is "not happening," according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports:

Headley and Upton have both been involved in trade rumors for much of the offseason. The Diamondbacks had a deal in place that was going to send Upton to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for a bevy of prospects, but the 25-year-old nixed the agreement using his limited no-trade clause.

Talks involving Headley haven’t gotten quite that serious, as far as has been reported, but Rosenthal says the Padres "eventually figure to move" the third baseman. The 28-year-old is two years away from free agency and is asking for $10.3 million in arbitration this winter.

While a Headley/Upton swap would appear to fill holes for San Diego and Arizona, Rosenthal believes the fact that the two teams play in the same division and their "histories" – Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers previously was with the Padres, and Padres GM Josh Byrnes previously was with the Diamondbacks – could be "too much to overcome."
