Nationals rumors: Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard, Kyle Lohse

Jamie Squire

Could the Nationals trade Drew Storen or Tyler Clippard or sign free agent right-hander Kyle Lohse?

Now that the Washington Nationals have signed closer Rafael Soriano, they have the flexibility to trade either of their late-inning right-handers, Tyler Clippard or Drew Storen, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal also spoke to an official that believes there's a chance the Nationals could be a fit for right-hander Kyle Lohse.

Many were surprised to see the Nationals' signing of Soriano. Now that he's on board, Washington has the depth to deal Clippard or Storen. Both pitchers have experience in the closer's role, as Clippard recorded 32 saves last season and Storen notched 43 saves in 2011.

Rosenthal notes that both right-handers have solid track records against left-handed hitters, and the Nationals are currently lacking a left-handed specialist. For this reason the team may not want to move either young arm.

In an effort to add another lefty to their ‘pen, one rival executive told Rosenthal that the Nationals could sign free agent right-hander Kyle Lohse and use southpaw Ross Detwiler as a reliever. Rosenthal adds that the "more likely move" would have Washington signing free agent right-hander Javier Vazquez, who would provide the team rotation insurance at a fraction of the price.
