The Philadelphia Phillies have signed free agent outfielder Delmon Young to a one-year, $750,000 contract.

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed free agent outfielder Delmon Young to a one-year, $750,000 contract, the team has announced.

Young's new contract with the Phillies also includes performance bonuses.

It was reported this morning that the Phillies were seriously considering signing Young. General manager Ruben Amaro didn't deny the rumor at the time, noting that Young was one of the free agents the team had been in contact with.

Young spent the past two seasons with the Detroit Tigers. Last year for the Tigers, he hit .267/.296/.411 with 27 doubles and 18 home runs over 574 at-bats. While he'll be used as an outfielder in Philadelphia, Young spent much of last season as Detroit's designated hitter.

Young will bring with him a reputation of having off-the-field issues, something Amaro addressed recently. The GM said that while he's hesitant to get involved in such a situation, he realizes the team has to keep their options open.

Young with join an outfield that already contains Ben Revere, John Mayberry Jr. and Domonic Brown, Darin Ruf and Laynce Nix.
