Earlier this offseason it looks like the Los Angeles Angels could trade outfielder Vernon Wells and a portion of his hefty remaining salary. However, it is "very" likely that Wells starts the season with the Angels, according to Alden Gonzalezof MLB.com.

Gonzalez adds that the Philadelphia Phillies one-year agreement with free agent outfielder Delmon Young increases the chances of Wells sticking with the Angels. The Phillies were one of Wells' top suitors this winter.

The Angels acquired Wells from the Toronto Blue Jays two offseasons ago in exchange for Mike Napoli and Juan Rivera. In his final season with the Blue Jays, Wells showed glimpses of his former self, hitting .273/.331/.515 with 44 doubles and 31 home runs. However, he's only hit .222/.258/.409 since joining the Angels.

Los Angeles currently has a projected outfield of Mike Trout, Josh Hamilton and Peter Bourjos, meaning Wells will likely once again take a reserve role. He's still owed $42 million over the next two seasons, making him an extremely costly non-starter.
