The Orioles are pursuing Diamondbacks outfielder Jason Kubel.
Yesterday it was reported that the Arizona Diamondbacks are hoping to trade outfielders Justin Upton or Jason Kubel sooner than later, and the Baltimore Orioles are viewed as a possible match for Kubel, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is reporting that the Orioles are now in fact pursuing Kubel, though talks are not yet at an advanced stage.
Team executives see the Orioles as a potential match for Kubel, a player they have been tied to throughout the offseason. Baltimore has been in the market for an impact bat, and while general manager Dan Duquette has reportedly made several inquiries into the matter, a deal has not yet resulted.
Kubel has played both corner outfield positions throughout his career, but he will man left field if acquired by the Orioles, as Nick Markakis is currently the team's regular in right. Kubel's addition would move Nate McLouth to a reserve role, while Nolan Reimold may pick up some at-bats against left-handers.
The Diamondbacks would likely be seeking some of the Orioles young pitching in any deal involving Kubel. Baltimore's young arms include Chris Tillman, Brian Matusz, Jake Arrieta, Zach Britton and Steve Johnson, among others.
