Alex Rodriguez Injury: Yankees 3B could miss entire 2013 season

There's a chance that Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez could miss the entire 2013 season.

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman admitted today that third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who recently underwent surgery to repair his hip impingement, could potentially miss the entire 2013 season, according to CBS New York:

"Yeah," Cashman replied when asked if there was a chance that A-Rod could miss the entire season. "I think because (of) the serious nature of the surgery and the condition that he's trying to recover from, you know, there is that chance."

While there is a chance that Rodriguez could miss the entire 2013 season, it's not the most likely scenario. Cashman said that in the base-case he'll return in six months and in the worst case he won't return at all. He added that the Yankees may also wind up with "something between" the two extremes.

New York expected to be without Rodriguez for at least a portion of the season, resulting in the signing of veteran corner infielder Kevin Youkilis. It's a good thing they landed the former Red Sox slugger, as they may be counting on him for longer than they initially thought.

Rodriguez hit .272/.353/.430 with 17 doubles and 18 home runs last season for the Yankees. The 37-year-old's production has declined over the past several seasons, but New York still owes him another $114 million through the 2017 season.
