Former Yankees, Nats, and Orioles' first baseman/designated hitter Nick Johnson has elected to retire at the age of 34, reports Sweeney Murti of WFAN:

Johnson battled with the injury demons his whole career, going to the disabled list 10 times in total for afflictions to his wrist, lower back, hand, face, thigh, and foot. Five of those trips were to the 60-day DL, and the lefty slugger twice missed an entire season recovering from an injury.

He appeared in just 62 games over the last three years because of a lingering wrist issue, briefly taking the field for the Yankees and Orioles in that time.

When Johnson did manage to get on the field, he was a solid player and among the league's best in getting on base. He finished half of his seasons with an on-base percentage over .400 and retires with a career mark of .399, which is 62nd all time.

Johnson hangs up the towel as a career .268/.399/.441 hitter with 95 home runs and a 123 OPS+ in just over 3,300 plate appearances.
