Angels sign Robert Coello to minor-league deal

The right-hander also gets an invitation to spring camp next month.

The Los Angeles Angels have signed free-agent right-hander Robert Coello to a minor-league deal with an invitation to big-league spring training, reports Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com:

The Angels signed right-hander Robert Coello to a Minor League contract with an invitation to big league Spring Training on Monday...

With the Angels, he'll probably be a swing man in Triple-A.

Coello, 28, has yet to get more than small cups of coffee in the big leagues, so is unlikely to get much time in Anaheim, if any.

The right-handed reliever's major-league career thus far amounts to a brief stint with the Red Sox in 2010 and a few mid-season appearances with the Blue Jays last year. He allowed 12 runs in 12 big-league innings of work overall, striking out 16.

This is actually Coello's second stint in the Angels' organization. The tall right-hander pitched in Rookie ball for the Halos in 2007, posting a 1.37 ERA in the small sample of 26⅓ innings.

From there, Coello bounced around with a few Independent League teams for a year before joining Boston's farm system in 2009. He then moved on to the Chicago Cubs in 2011 and Toronto this past season.

Coello owns a 4.05 ERA and 9.7 K/9 rate in four seasons at the Triple-A level, accumulating about half of his innings as a starter.
