The Arizona Diamondbacks are still looking to trade away one of their outfielders, and industry experts have yet to reach a consensus about which outfielder -- Justin Upton or Jason Kubel -- is the more likely candidate, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports:
Still can't get consensus on which OFer #DBacks will trade. Some in industry say preference is Kubel. Others still convinced it's Upton.— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) January 3, 2013
The D'Backs have been shopping their outfielders for months, and now that they have added Cody Ross on a three-year, $26 million deal, a trade is even more of a sure thing. The question that remains is who the outfielder shopped will be.
Upton, 25, has been a mainstay on the rumor mill seemingly since the beginning of time, while the 30-year-old Kubel's name has been dropped in more recently as the "preferred" trade option.
Upton is younger and has the higher ceiling of the two players, but is owed $28.5 million over the next three years, a rather steep price for a corner outfielder. Kubel, on the other hand, will earn $7.5 million in 2013 and has an equally-priced option for the next season.
Both Kubel and Upton put up solid numbers in 2012, and both have rather severe home/road splits, so the choice of who to trade may come down to what kind of package the D'Backs can get in return for the outfielders.
