Ryan Kalish injury: Shoulder surgery a success; estimated July return date

Otto Greule Jr

The Red Sox outfielder will be out at least five months to recover from his torn labrum operation.

Injury-prone Boston Red Sox outfielder Ryan Kalish underwent shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in his non-throwing arm on Tuesday and is expected to be out until at least July, reports Alex Speier of WEEI:

On Tuesday, Red Sox outfielder Ryan Kalish underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right (non-throwing) shoulder, a procedure that included a repair of a posterior labrum tear. The Red Sox described the surgery as successful...

[He] could be ready to play (barring a setback in his rehab) by early July.

Kalish, still just 24, has been in a constant battle with the injury bug since his Fenway Park debut in 2010. The left-handed throwing/hitting outfielder has appeared in just 89 games over the last three seasons, missing significant time to undergo separate operations to repair a bulging disc in his neck and a similarly torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Kalish has been unimpressive in his two short stints with the big-league club -- hitting just .243/.293/.351 with four home runs -- but he only has 282 plate appearances to his name thus far so it's difficult to put much stock in those numbers.

Surely headed to the 60-day DL, the young outfielder will likely yield his fifth outfielder spot to Ryan Sweeney or Drew Sutton.
