Mets rumors: New York's outfield set?

Jason Szenes

The Mets may actually not add an outfielder on a major league contract this offseason.

While the New York Mets have been tied to free agents Scott Hairston and Grady Sizemore as well as Adam Eaton of the Arizona Diamondbacks, the team may actually not add an outfielder on a major league contract this offseason, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York:

Although Scott Hairston remains a free agent, a team insider said it's conceivable the Mets actually will not add an outfielder on a major league contract this offseason.

Rubin notes that Lucas Duda appears to be penciled in as the Mets’ primary left fielder, while center and right could be filled using a platoon system. The left-handed hitters in the platoon would be Kirk Nieuwenhuis in center field and Mike Baxter in right.

As for the right-handed bats, Rubin notes that Collin Cowgill, who was acquired from the Oakland Athletics, is a logical choice for one spot. A Mets’ insider told Rubin that infielder Justin Turner "should get strong consideration as a platoon outfielder" even though he has no experience out there.

If Turner is viewed as primarily an infielder, Rubin says that newly signed free agents Andrew Brown or Brian Bixler could contend for a spot as a right-handed-hitting platoon outfielder.
