Beck was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Dec. 26. He was selected off waivers by Pittsburgh from the Blue Jays in October.
The Blue Jays initially acquired Beck from the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2008 in exchange for infielder David Eckstein. He’s spent parts of the last two seasons at the major league level with the club, as he allowed 11 earned runs on 21 hits and five walks with nine strikeouts over 15 2/3 innings in 2012.
Beck spent a majority of the season with the Blue Jays’ Triple-A affiliate. Over 43 appearances the 27-year-old maintained an ERA of 1.31 with 4.5 strikeouts and 2.4 walks per nine innings.
