Marlins rumors: Miami not shopping Giancarlo Stanton

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

Rumors of the club talking to the Padres and others about a trade for the young outfielder appear to be false.

Contrary to earlier reports, the Miami Marlins are not talking with clubs about trading young slugger Giancarlo Stanton and have yet to even discuss the possibility internally, reports Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald:

Simply put, the Marlins "are not moving him," according to a source I spoke with. They haven't even "discussed" it internally. The team's plans calling for Stanton to start the season with the club and occupy the clean-up spot have "not changed at all..."

The latest report indicates the Marlins have spoken to the Padres about Stanton. "Completely off base" and "totally ridiculous" was the response I received when I asked about it.

A report over the weekend (linked above) from the San Diego Union-Tribune stated that the Marlins had been in contact with several clubs -- including the Padres -- about dealing Stanton. The reasoning given in the article was that the slugger had fallen out with the club in the months since their blockbuster, fire sale deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Spencer adds that while the club may indeed "listen" when clubs contact them about Stanton, that is a long, long way from actually contemplating and/or contacting clubs about a trade involving the young outfielder.

Stanton, 23, hit .290/.361/.608 with 37 home runs in just 123 games for the Marlins last season. Though he has had some knee troubles of late, he is considered one of the most valuable young players in the game.
