Chicago may listen to trade possibilities this spring.

Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza was one of the most coveted names at last season's trade deadline before going down with a season-ending trade injury. If the veteran is able to prove he is healthy this spring, he may find himself back on the trading block, speculates Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe:

Hard to read the Cubs, since they’re building for the future while also signing veteran pitchers.

Garza still has to show teams in spring training that his injured elbow is OK; the Cubs would listen on a possible deal.

Coming off the organization's first 100-loss season since 1966, Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer and company have done a good job of rebuilding the club's pitching staff this winter. The Cubs have added Edwin Jackson, Scott Baker, Scott Feldman, and Carlos Villanueva as rotation options while also bolstering their bullpen by adding Kyuji Fujikawa and re-signing Shawn Camp.

All the winter additions could give the team the flexibility necessary to depart with Garza without suffering a massive loss in production if they want. Though the Cubbies could depart with the veteran right-hander before the season starts, it seems much more likely that they would wait until his value spikes at the trade deadline and just hope that his arm holds out this year.
