Braves rumors: Atlanta, Brian McCann shelving extension talks

Charles LeClaire-US PRESSWIRE

The Braves and Brian McCann have agreed to shutdown extension talks until after the 2013 season.

Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren told Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio on Sunday that he and Brian McCann’s representation have decided to wait until the end of the 2013 season to discuss a contract extension:

McCann is set to hit the free agent market following the 2013 season, but the Braves don’t appear to be comfortable negotiating a contract considering he’s coming off of a major shoulder injury. McCann underwent surgery on the injury that limited him to 121 games last season and significantly impacted his production. Entering the 2012 season with a career line of .286/.358/.486, McCann only managed to hit .230/.300/.399 with 14 doubles and 20 home runs last season.

Considering he plays a prime position and has posted a solid track record outside of 2012, McCann still has the potential to earn a nice payday next winter. However, if his struggled continue into next season it could be his last with the Braves.
