The reality increases daily of a Phillies outfield hodgepodge formed by Ben Revere, Domonic Brown, John Mayberry Jr., Darin Ruf and Laynce Nix. The man tasked with forming the 2013 roster was willing to admit as much Monday.
"We're likely going with what we've got," Ruben Amaro Jr. said...
Youth is the choice in the outfield, for better or worse.
As recently as yesterday, the Phillies were rumored to still be on the market for a veteran outfield bat. While Amaro added that the club had not completely eliminated the possibility of adding that veteran bat, the available options -- Vernon Wells, Scott Hairston, and Alfonso Soriano -- are only marginal upgrades to what the team already has.
Brown, Mayberry, Ruf and Nix will duke it out for the two corner outfield spots if the roster stays unchanged. Brown is probably a lock for one of the spots, and the other could be a platoon of Ruf or Mayberry with the lefty-hitting Nix. However, the Phillies could decide to platoon at both corner positions if they really wanted.
The Phillies do have room for one more player on their 40-man roster, so someone is likely to get added between now and spring training. Whether that someone comes from outside the organization remains to be seen.
