Are the Padres poised to make a significant move?
While the San Diego Padres seemed disinclined to make a strong play for any of the remaining free agent starting pitchers, one rival executive told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that "there is no chance" that general manager Josh Byrnes is finished making significant moves:
One rival executive says there is no chance that general manager Josh Byrnes completes his off-season with the addition of free-agent right-hander Jason Marquis as his only significant move.
The Padres signed Jason Marquis earlier this offseason, but free agency doesn’t appear to be an option at this point. The club believes they can get roughly equivalent value out of their young starters as opposed to spending money on a Joe Saunders.
Still, San Diego could look to the trade market to add to their rotation. Rosenthal lists Detroit Tigers’ Rick Porcello, Kansas City Royals’ Luke Hochevar or Los Angeles Dodgers’ Aaron Harang as possible targets. He also says the club could hold off on making a significant addition until the start of spring training when they can "better determine their needs."
