Twins re-sign Bernier

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The Twins and Doug Bernier have agreed to terms on a minor league contract.

The Minnesota Twins have re-signed infielder Doug Bernier to a 2014 minor league contract just a week after outrighting him off their 40 man roster, tweets Mike Berardino, Twins beat writer for the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Bernier, 33, originally signed as an amateur free agent with the Colorado Rockies in 2002. After spending 7 seasons in the Rockies' minor league system, Bernier finally made the show as a 28 year old in 2008, getting four at-bats for the club in mid-June. Following the season, Bernier became a free agent and would spend the next four years split between the Yankees and Pirates organizations.

Last winter, Bernier signed on with Minnesota, and spent the majority of 2013 with the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings, hitting .295/.370/.407 in 92 games. In late July, just over 5 years after initially making it to the big leagues, Bernier was called up to Minnesota, where he would receive regular playing time for the remainder of the year. In 33 games with the Twins, Bernier hit .226/.339/.283 with a 0.6 WAR.

Bernier's role with the club in 2014 is largely unknown as of the moment. Despite having one of the brightest farm systems in the game, the Twins are devoid of talent in the middle infield, particularly at shortstop where their current depth chart is led by the uninspiring duo of Pedro Florimon Jr. and Eduardo Escobar.
