Stephen Drew will not return to Red Sox

The shortstop is drawing multi-year interest from teams, but the Sox are only willing to offer him a one-year deal.

Free agent shortstop Stephen Drew will not return to the Boston Red Sox in 2014, according to ESPNBoston's Gordon Edes.

Edes notes that Drew is receiving interest from teams looking to sign him to multi-year contracts, while the Sox are only interested in bringing him back on a one-year deal.

Due to the emergence of young infielder Xander Bogaerts, the idea of bringing Drew back to Boston was more of a luxury option for the team than a necessity heading into the offseason.

Because Drew declined the team's one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer, the Sox will receive draft pick compensation when he signs elsewhere.

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com, many teams are "moving quickly" on Drew, signifying that he has a strong market that will likely net him a deal larger than what the Red Sox could offer.

The Mets and Yankees are both reportedly interested in signing Drew, and the Cardinals, who had interest in him last year before he signed with the Sox, are also likely to be among the teams who make a run at him.
