Mets "heavily involved" in talks for Bronson Arroyo

USA TODAY Sports

The Mets and Twins are being aggressive in the Arroyo sweepstakes.

The New York Mets are now "heavily involved" in talks with right-hander Bronson Arroyo, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations. No deal is close at this time, but general manager Sandy Alderson is scheduled to meet with Arroyo at his home in Florida this week, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN.com.

The source confirms that the Minnesota Twins are still seriously involved in the Arroyo sweepstakes, even with Ricky Nolasco locked up to a four-year contract. The Los Angeles Angels are still involved, although they are showing less aggressiveness than the Twins and Mets.

With their recent moves to bolster their rotations, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants are not currently involved. The New York Yankees are waiting to see what happens with Hiroki Kuroda and Masahiro Tanaka before jumping into the Arroyo talks, and the Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies have not been involved in recent days after expressing interest early in the offseason.

The soon-to-be 37-year old has been one of the most consistent workhorses in the league throughout his career, making at least 32 starts in every season since 2005. He pitched to a 14-12 record with a 3.79 ERA in 32 starts for the Reds in 2013, and has posted a career 138-127 record in fourteen major league seasons with the Pirates (2000-2002), Red Sox (2003-2005), and Reds (2006-2013).
