Giants considering futures of Johnny Monell, Francisco Peguero

Dustin Bradford

Monell is currently on waivers, while Peguero is drawing interest from the Orioles.

To make room for newly-added pitchers Erik Cordier and Jose De Paula, the San Francisco Giants designated catcher Johnny Monell and outfielder Francisco Peguero for assignment. The team has ten days to either trade, waive or release the two players, and sources have indicated that each should find a new home soon.

Monell has already been placed on waivers and will find out by Monday if he has been claimed by a team, according to a source. If he clears waivers and is outrighted by the Giants, he will refuse the assignment and become a free agent. The market for left-handed hitting catchers is strong at the moment, meaning he may be able to land a major league backup job as a free agent.

Peguero is not yet on waivers, signifying that the Giants are possibly exploring trade options involving him. A source indicates that the Baltimore Orioles are showing interest in adding Peguero, meaning that they could either try to work out a trade with the Giants or claim the outfielder off waivers. If Peguero clears waivers, he will also elect free agency and refuse San Francisco's outright assignment.

While neither player currently knows where they will be playing in 2014, their Giants careers seem all but over. Both are expected to find new homes within the next couple of days.
