Mets, others interested in Rafael Furcal

Scott Rovak-US PRESSWIRE

The 36-year old is looking to come back from Tommy John surgery.

The New York Mets are one of five or six teams who are showing interest in free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal, according to Jorge Castillo of the Star-Ledger and Mike Puma of the New York Post. Furcal missed the entire 2013 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and is looking to make a comeback with a team looking for a shortstop.

While the other teams who are interested in signing the 36-year old are unknown, teams looking for help at shortstop this winter will include the Yankees, Red Sox, Pirates and Cardinals, with whom Furcal spent the last three seasons. In 2011 and 2012 with St. Louis, he hit .262 with 12 HR and 65 RBI in 171 games, bringing his career totals to a .281 average with 113 RBI and 585 RBI in thirteen major league seasons with the Braves (2000-2005), Dodgers (2006-2011) and Cardinals (2012-2013).

Because he is recovering from a serious injury, Furcal will likely have to settle for a one-year, incentive-laden deal from a team looking to take a flyer on him this offseason. Other available shortstops on the free agent market include Stephen Drew, Jhonny Peralta and Clint Barmes.
