Giants sign Mike Morse to 1-year deal

Morse was in serious discussions with the Astros, but ultimately heads to San Francisco.

The San Francisco Giants have agreed to a one-year deal with outfielder Mike Morse, as first reported by Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com. The deal will pay Morse $6 million in 2014 and is pending a physical, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.

Morse, who turns 32 in March, was in serious discussions with the Astros on Wednesday night before signing with the Giants, who pledged to give him their everyday left field spot. He joins Hunter Pence, Angel Pagan and Gregor Blanco in the team's outfield, and is expected to be a starter for the team in 2014.

In 88 games split between the Mariners and Orioles in 2013, Morse hit .215 with 13 HR and 27 RBI in what equates to the worst statistical season of his career. He is a lifetime .281 hitter with 83 HR and 272 RBI, with his best season coming in 2011 with the Nationals, when he hit .303 with 31 HR and 95 RBI in 146 games.

In addition to the Giants and Astros, Morse drew interest from the Marlins, Rangers and Rockies this offseason. He was reportedly seeking a $7-8 million contract, so it will be interesting to see if he received that amount once the details are finalized.
