Pirates agree to re-sign Clint Barmes

USA TODAY Sports

Barmes heads back to Pittsburgh to take the team's utility infielder spot.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms on new contract with shortstop Clint Barmes, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Buster Olney of ESPN.com first reported that a deal was close to getting done, and terms are not yet known.

Barmes, 34, will return to the Pirates for his third season with the team. He hit .211 with 5 HR and 23 RBI in 108 games as Pittsburgh's primary shortstop in 2013, and will return in a utility role behind Jordy Mercer, who is expected to get a significant amount of playing time next season.

For his career, Barmes is a lifetime .246 hitter with 86 HR and 392 HR in eleven seasons with the Rockies (2003-2010), Astros (2011) and Pirates (2012-2013). The Pirates expressed interest in bringing him back all offseason, and he also was linked to the Red Sox as a possible utility infield option.
