Twins re-sign Mike Pelfrey to 2-year, $11 million deal

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sport

The right-hander returns to Minnesota after having an offer in hand for weeks.

The Minnesota Twins have agreed to a two-year, $11 million contract with right-handed starter Mike Pelfrey, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Heyman notes that the deal also includes $3.5 million in performance bonuses.

Pelfrey is the third starting pitcher to go to the Twins this offseason, joining Ricky Nolasco (4 years, $49 million) and Phil Hughes (3 years, $24 million) in a completely revamped starting rotation.

The Rangers, Giants and Yankees were also reportedly among the teams interested in signing Pelfrey, but the Twins showed consistent interest in re-signing him and had an outstanding offer out to him for the last couple of weeks.

Coming off Tommy John surgery in his first season in Minnesota, Pelfrey pitched to a a 5-13 record and 5.19 ERA in 29 starts. He was viewed as someone who pitched better than his numbers showed, with some analysts pointing to bad luck as part of the reason his ERA was inflated. In eight career major league seasons with the Mets (2006-2012) and Twins (2013), Pelfrey is 55-67 with a 4.48 ERA. His best season came in 2010, when he went 15-9 with a 3.66 ERA in 33 starts with New York.

With Nolasco, Hughes and Pelfrey joining options like Kevin Correia, Samuel Deduno and Kyle Gibson in the Twins' rotation, the team seems set for arms after prioritizing that search all winter. Ervin Santana and Matt Garza were also mentioned as potential fits, but it looks as though they will have to find jobs elsewhere now that the Twins have made their moves.
