We knew the Yankees would spend this offseason. How much was anyone’s guess. So far this offseason the Yankees have spent nearly $300 million dollars combined on Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran, and Hiroki Kuroda yet the Yankees still have major holes to fill.

The Yankees need a second baseman after Robinson Cano took a boatload of cash and headed to Seattle. Even though they have signed Kelly Johnson, the Yankees talked to the Reds about Brandon Phillips and they were in the running for Omar Infante who ended up in Kansas City. The Yankees need a third baseman, as Alex Rodriguez will be suspended for the foreseeable future. They had Eduardo Nunez but he struggled on both sides of the ball. The Yankees need insurance at SS for Derek Jeter after his injuries last year.

New York needs major help in the rotation and bullpen. Kuroda was a must to re-sign but they still need about 200 innings to fill. The Yankees will be a favorite when/if Tanaka gets posted from Japan. They have some interest in Ulbaldo Jimenez and Ervin Santana. Santana is commanding a contract of one hundred million or more and isn’t a real fit. Ulbaldo Jimenez could come cheaper but they would have to give up another draft pick. Matt Garza could be a fit but the Diamondbacks and Angels seem be the favorites.

After Mariano Rivera retired, Boone Logan went to Colorado, and Joba to Detroit, the Yankees need to upgrade their bullpen. With J.P. Howell signing tonight another name has come off the board for the Yankees. The Yankees could have interest in Balfour or Rodney but Balfour seems destined for Baltimore and Rodney wants ten million dollars a year. The Yankees have seemed to not think of their bullpen but they need to act fast before it’s too late.

So, are the Yankees done spending? The short answer is no, but they seem to be cheap in the infield and wait for Tanaka to be posted. Even though the Yankees have kept saying that the $189 million tax threshold is a goal they wont stop at 189 and not field a winning team.
