Orioles rumors: Baltimore 'might consider' Bobby Abreu

The Baltimore Orioles might consider signing free agent Bobby Abreu, but they're going to see what they have in camp first, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

The Orioles have been seeking a bat throughout the winter, but as of yet they haven't made a significant acquisition. Abreu would hardly count as such, but he could be another appealing low-risk option for general manager Dan Duquette.

Entering the offseason, the Orioles were reportedly in the market for a bat that can man first base, left field or both. Abreu has played the outfield throughout his career, but he's better suited for the role of designated hitter.

Chris Davis manned that role for the Orioles 60 times last season, but he's slated to become the team's regular first baseman. Wilson Betemit and Russ Canzler project to share time at DH. Betemit offers a favorable matchup against right-handed pitchers, while Canzler has superior numbers versus southpaws.

There doesn't appear to be a clear fit for Abreu in Baltimore. He's a defensive liability, and his offensive productive has dropped off precipitously over the past few seasons.

Still, Duquette has made increasing the Orioles' on base percentage a priority, and Abreu continues to get on at a better-than-average clip. If the price is right, Baltimore may take flier.
