The chances of free agent infielder Ryan Theriot re-signing with the San Francisco Giants are "very slim."

The chances of free agent infielder Ryan Theriot re-signing with the San Francisco Giants are "very slim," according to Henry Schulman of The San Francisco Chronicle.

Schulman notes that the issue keeping Theriot from reuniting with the Giants is the veteran's desire for more playing time. The 33-year-old is not only seeking additional at-bats, he's looking for a "starting gig," according to Schulman.

Theriot signed with the Giants last offseason and hit .270/.316/.321 with 16 doubles and 13 stolen bases in 18 attempts over 384 plate appearances in 2012. He's spent the past three seasons with four teams, the Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs.

Theriot has manned mostly shortstop and second base throughout his career, though he's also played third base and both corner outfield positions. He spent the majority of last season at second base for the Giants.

Over eight seasons in the majors, Theriot has hit .281/.341/.350. He's hit .270/.319/.324 over the past three seasons.

If Theriot does not re-sign with the Giants, manager Bruce Bochy lists the top three candidates to replace him on the team's roster as Tony Abreu, Kensuke Tanake and Wilson Valdez.

Beyond the Giants, the Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, and Philadelphia Phillies have been among the teams tied to Theriot this offseason.
