Yankees DFA Russ Canzler to make room for Travis Hafner

Russ Canzler has been designated for assignment just 26 days after being claimed by the Yankees. The move was made to clear up room on the 40-man roster for Travis Hafner.

Russ Canzler can't seem to find a team who wants him. Canzler was selected off waivers by the New York Yankees on January 4th from the Cleveland Indians. Since January of 2012, Canzler has been a member of five different teams. And now the Yankees have designated him for assignment.

According to the Standard Speaker, the Yankees DFA'd Canzler in order to make room for recently signed Travis Hafner. Canzler can accept the assignment or he can be placed on waivers where he will likely land with yet another team. Such is the case with Canzler in his recent stops in Toronto and Cleveland.

Canzler has appeared in 26 games in his Major League career. He made his Major League debut September 15, 2011 with the Cleveland Indians. He played in three games that season and followed it up with 26 games-played in 2012. The 26-year old has spent the majority of his career in the minors. Nine years to be exact.

In his Major League career, Canzler has hit .271/.304/.396 with three home runs. He has played the outfield as well as first base. Had the Yankees not signed Hafner, Canzler may have got a chance at some decent playing time. Now it's unclear whether Canzler will get a shot in the Majors at all this season.
