Rockies looking to trade Ramon Hernandez?

Doug Pensinger

With the depth they have at catcher, it would make sense for the Colorado Rockies to explore a trade. One candidate for such a trade would be Ramon Hernandez.

When Ramon Hernandez got injured last season, his future was not clear. Hernandez is under contract through this season, then he can become a free agent. His future may be a little clearer now. After the door was opened to other candidates last season because of his injury, the Rockies discovered they can probably get along just fine without him.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports says the team's depth at catcher will likely lead to a trade. Hernandez makes the most sense as a trade candidate. He could be the type of player a team goes after to help push them through the second half and into the playoffs. He could also be the type of player a contender seeks out if they lose their catcher to injury.

Catching is an area of particular surplus for Colorado. Wilin Rosario, Ramon Hernandez and Jordan Pacheco are on the team's 40-man roster. Yorvit Torrealba is a non-roster invitee to spring training. Hernandez, earning $3.2 million, is likely the one the Rockies most would like to trade.

Hernandez suffered a torn hamstring in September of last year. He eventually underwent surgery and has been rehabbing ever since. Hernandez is expected to be ready for the start of the season, which bodes well for the Rockies' chances at trading him and getting a decent return.

In his career, Hernandez has hit .264/.327/.417. Last season, he hit .217/.247/.353. Hernandez is a 14-year Major League veteran and has been known to handle a pitching staff well. However, at 36 years old, there are younger, more productive options out there. The Rockies have seen this in Wilin Rosario. Rosario is 22 and finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting last season.
