Twins rumors: Minnesota had interest in Jim Thome

The Minnesota Twins expressed interest in free agent designated hitter Jim Thome earlier this offseason.

The Minnesota Twins expressed interest in free agent designated hitter Jim Thome earlier this offseason, according to La Velle E. Neal III of The Star Tribune.

The Twins had a conversation with Thome's camp about a month ago, a person with knowledge of the discussions told Neal. While nothing came up and there haven't recently been negotiations between Thome and the Twins, Minnesota's interest could potentially pick up.

For the time being, Thome is continuing to work out in Arizona. He's hoping to stay in shape and await an opportunity, as he's recently said he's serious about continuing his playing career. However, Thome isn't interested in signing a minor league contract, something that has limited his options and suitors.

Neal believes if Thome lessens his demands and is willing to sign a minor league deal that carries with it a good chance to break camp with a major league team, the Twins, Cleveland Indians and others could increase their level of interest in the slugger.

Thome spent the 2012 season with the Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles. After hitting .242/.338/.516 over 71 plate appearances with the Phillies, he was traded to the Orioles. The veteran went on to hit .257/.348/.396 in 115 plate appearances with Baltimore.
