The Mets have signed first baseman Rhyne Hughes.
The Mets have signed first baseman Rhyne Hughes, according to the player's Twitter account. Hughes, 29, has played in the Rays' and Orioles' systems, but has only briefly made the Majors and that was in 2010 with Baltimore.
Hughes will probably provide the Mets with at-bats for their Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas, as he has proven at this point that he is mostly just roster filler and an organizational soldier.
He was drafted in 2003 from Pearl River Community College in the 50th round by the Pirates, but did not sign. The Rays nabbed him in the 8th round the next year, but he never fulfilled that potential. He has never been more than what he is now, but that does not mean he is not a valuable member of an organization.
In 2012, Hughes hit 13 home runs and batted .278 for the Orioles' Double-A affiliate in Bowie. He has a career batting average of .271 in the minors.
