2013 World Baseball Classic injuries: Andres Torres, Jose Mijares

USA TODAY Sports

Andres Torres and Jose Mijaresare expected to skip the WBC due to injuries.

San Francisco Giants outfielder Andres Torres and left-hander Jose Mijares were planning on representing their countries in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. However, both players are expected to skip the WBC due to injuries, according to Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area.

Torres recently underwent an MRI exam that revealed a strained oblique. The outfielder is expected to be held out of action for at least a week, according to Baggarly. He had been experiencing discomfort in his side earlier this spring, and he aggravated the injury Thursday.

Torres hit .230/.327/.337 with 17 doubles, seven triples and three home runs over 434 plate appearances for the Giants last season. The 35-year-old is expected to form the right-handed-hitting component of San Francisco's left field platoon, partnering with Gregor Blanco.

Mijares has been sidelined after complaining of elbow tenderness after allowing two runs in an inning of work Thursday. San Francisco acquired the 28-year-old from the Kansas City Royals last season.

Torres was scheduled to ship out of Giants' camp Saturday along with fellow countryman Angel Pagan to join Team Puerto Rico in Miami. Mijares was included on Venezuela's provisional roster. With Torres and Mijares bowing out, San Francisco now has eight players slated to head to the WBC.
