Orioles to re-sign Mark Hendrickson

J. Meric

After a one-year hiatus from baseball, the tall left-hander is coming back to Baltimore for a fourth season (on a minor-league deal).

The Baltimore Orioles are expected to announce the re-signing of veteran left-hander Mark Hendrickson to a minor-league deal at some point this week, per Roch Kubatko of MASN:

The Orioles also expect to announce the signing of veteran left-hander Mark Hendrickson to a minor league contract with a spring training invite early next week.

Hendrickson threw twice for the Orioles at their mini-camp, showing off his new sidearm delivery, and manager Buck Showalter wants to take another look at him in Sarasota.

Hendrickson, 38, spent three of the last four seasons in the O's organization, but did not play anywhere in 2012. He has not pitched at the big-league level since turning in 11 innings of work in 2011.

Once a starter for the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers, the tall southpaw made the shift to the bullpen upon his 2009 arrival in Baltimore. Hendrickson faired no better in relief as a LOOGY than he did as a starting pitcher, so the Orioles sent him to Triple-A for most of the 2011 season.

Hendrickson owns a 5.03 ERA and 5.1 K/9 in 10 major-league seasons, so he is unlikely to see time in Baltimore this year unless things go terribly wrong for the Birds.
