White Sox rumors: Lefty bat addition still on the table?

Jerry Lai-US PRESSWIRE

Chicago is still contemplating adding a left-handed hitter to balance out their righty-heavy infield "if they can," but their options are looking pretty slim.

The Chicago White Sox have been on the prowl for a left-handed hitter for some time, but have not had much luck on that horizon as of yet. The club is apparently still "wouldn't mind" adding a lefty bat "if they can," according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, but they are just about out of options on the free-agent market.

When we last heard about Chicago's search for a complementary bench bat at the end of January, Casey Kotchman, Jason Giambi, and Lyle Overbay were still on the market as potential solutions.

Now, however, slap-hitting Willie Harris -- who played just 25 big-league games last year -- seems to be the only left-handed hitting infielder remaining on the open market. Former Giants Ryan Theriot and Freddy Sanchez are still on the lookout for jobs, but neither bats from the left side of the plate.

While the ChiSox have not explicitly said that the lefty bat they're looking for needs to be an infielder, a quick look at their 40-man roster gives a pretty good indication of that being what they need. The only infielder Chicago has that hits from the first-base side of the plate is Adam Dunn, and calling him an infielder is generous.

If it turns out the club is not just looking at infielders, then they could be in play for Tigers outfielder Brennan Boesch, who appears to be out of a job in Detroit. There's also the chance that guys like Overbay and Giambi become available once camp ends if they do not earn a roster spot with their current clubs.
