Diamondbacks rumors: Paul Goldschmidt still in line for extension?

Doug Pensinger

Arizona is going to give another go at offering the young first baseman a contract extension before the season starts. Goldschmidt wasn't too receptive to the idea the first time around.

The Arizona Diamondbacks didn't have much luck the first time they approached first baseman Paul Goldschmidt about a contract extension last month, but that hasn't dissuaded them from trying a second time.

The D'Backs plan to approach Goldschmidt about an extension again some time before the regular season begins, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic:

In reporting a Paul Goldschmidt story for tomorrow’s paper, I heard that the team is planning to make another run at him about a contract extension before the season starts.

Goldschmidt, 25, told the D'Backs that he wanted to wait the last time the club approached him, and it's unclear whether he's given any indication that his feelings on the matter have changed over the last month.

Arizona were very active on all fronts this offseason, including that of contract extensions. J.J. Putz, Aaron Hill, and Martin Prado have all agreed to multi-year deals with the club in the last several months, and apparently Goldschmidt is next on their list.

The slugging first baseman is still two seasons away from arbitration -- and five away from free agency -- so Arizona still has quite a while to lock up Goldschmidt on a team-friendly deal if they can't get anything done this month.

Goldschmidt has just a year and a quarter of big-league time under his belt, and is a .278/.354/.487 with 28 home runs in 764 plate appearances thus far.
