Yankees rumors: Scott Rolen, Chipper Jones

Kevin C. Cox

In their search for a replacement middle infielder, the Yankees have called veteran third basemen Chipper Jones and Scott Rolen.

This morning the New York Yankees were tied to free agent first baseman Derrek Lee. It turns out Lee wasn't the only veteran corner infielder general manager Brian Cashman has been reaching out to. Jack Curry of The YES Network reports that the GM has investigated the possibility of signing third basemen Scott Rolen and Chipper Jones.

Cashman told reporters that he has looked into signing Rolen, a free agent third baseman that is said to be mulling retirement. When questioned further regarding Rolen, the GM hinted that the veteran is seeking some sort of guarantee when it comes to playing time and salary this season, according to Curry.

Joel Sherman of The New York Post noted that Rolen has been offered $4 million by the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers, but he's turned down both teams. Sherman's been told that Rolen is only open to returning for guaranteed money, not an incentive-laden contract.

Meanwhile, Cashman told reporters that he is "serious" in his pursuit of retired third baseman Chipper Jones. The GM plans to discuss a potential signing with Jones' agent, B.B. Abbott.

Sherman spoke with Abbott, who told him that he doesn't see a scenario where Jones would come out of retirement. While the former Atlanta Braves star would be "flattered" by the offer, Abbott doesn't believe Jones would consider it.
